Best Practices Analyzer

Microsoft has been working hard to release their own tools which help DBAs and IT professionals to get a hang of their database systems.

The Bets Practices Analyzer is not a new concept – it is available for SQL 2000, SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 (and for R2!).

What it does is exactly what the title suggests: analysis and best practices suggestions.

The best part of it is that it not only checks the SQL Server for mis-configurations or faults, but it also checks the underlying OS and it’s drivers versions and configurations.

Here are the links to the BPA for SQL Server: (keep in mind that there are also BPAs for BizTalk, ASP.NET, and many other products)

SQL Server 2005 Best Practices Analyzer

Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Best Practices Analyzer

For the BPA 2008 you will also need to install the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer 2.0
